So many times blessings come in disguise. They are a seeming interruption to our nice, neat, tidy lives. It could be an unexpected knock on the door or a child tugging on your leg. It could be a storm on the day of the picnic or a cold on the day of an important presentation. Many times these blessings are more than just inconveniences though. They are heartaches. They are big and crazy gut-wrenching trials. We wouldn't even define them as blessings, because they appear as anything but blessings. I could use a lot of my own words to connect the bad things in our life with being a blessing, but a song writer did a much better job already. Laura Story wrote a song titled Blessings and in it she calls them 'mercies in disguise.' As I was driving home in the rain this morning after dropping off my daughter at school, this song came on. I couldn't help but be drawn to the words as the rain hit the windshield and the wipers were swiping them away. "'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops, What if Your healing comes through tears . . ." Today I just wanted to share this song with you. If you don't need it today, there's a good chance you will need it soon. We pray for blessings We pray for peace Comfort for family, protection while we sleep We pray for healing, for prosperity We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering All the while, You hear each spoken need Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things 'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops What if Your healing comes through tears What if a thousand sleepless nights Are what it takes to know You're near What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise We pray for wisdom Your voice to hear And we cry in anger when we cannot feel You near We doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love As if every promise from Your Word is not enough All the while, You hear each desperate plea And long that we have faith to believe 'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops What if Your healing comes through tears What if a thousand sleepless nights Are what it takes to know You're near And what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise When friends betray us When darkness seems to win We know that pain reminds this heart That this is not, this is not our home It's not our home 'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops What if Your healing comes through tears And what if a thousand sleepless nights Are what it takes to know You're near What if my greatest disappointments Or the achings of this life Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy And what if trials of this life The rain, the storms, the hardest nights Are Your mercies in disguise (Blessings by Laura Story)
